The expansion of Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art in Prato was inaugurated in October 2016. Designed by Dutch architect Maurice Nio of NIO architecten, the new building “envelops” the original 1988 structure designed by Italo Gamberini, transforming the complex into a futuristic, spaceship-like form and doubling the exhibition space to over 3,000 square meters. In the large plaza leading to the museum, a continuous custom-made seating area has been created using white reconstructed stone with transparent water-repellent finish.
