This special version of Andromeda Bench is made of photocatalytic concrete able to break down the pollutants (nitrogen oxide and pm10) in the atmosphere.
Photocatalysis is a natural process that in the presence of sunlight accelerates oxidation processes already occuring in nature and favours the decomposition of environmental pollutants. Laboratory tests carried out on buildings and surfaces made of this material show air quality improvement in polluted urban areas and certify that, over time, the surfaces are preserved from deterioration caused by the weather and atmospheric conditions.

PHOTOCATALYSIS: THE POWER OF LIGHT


Photocatalysis is a natural phenomenon in which a substance, called a photoinitiator, changes the speed of a chemical reaction through the action of light. By harnessing light energy, photoinitiators induce the formation of strongly oxidising reagents that are capable of decomposing organic and inorganic substances in the atmosphere. Photocatalysis is thus an accelerator of oxidation processes that already exist in nature and thus promotes the faster decomposition of pollutants in the environment, preventing them from accumulating.

Photocatalytic activity has been applied for more than a decade to various building materials, including cementitious binders, to achieve an ‘anti-pollution’ and now an ‘anti-pollution’ effect. Worsening pollution levels in urban areas have recently emphasised interest in these materials for their ability to break down pollutants in the atmosphere. Photocatalysis thus contributes effectively to improving the quality of life.
